Goodreads Summary:

Who is the real McLean?

Since her parents’ bitter divorce, McLean and her dad, a restaurant consultant, have been on the move-four towns in two years. Estranged from her mother and her mother’s new family, McLean has followed her dad in leaving the unhappy past behind. And each new place gives her a chance to try out a new persona: from cheerleader to drama diva. But now, for the first time, McLean discovers a desire to stay in one place and just be herself, whoever that is. Perhaps Dave, the guy next door, can help her find out.

Combining Sarah Dessen’s trademark graceful writing, great characters, and compelling storytelling, What Happened to Goodbye is irresistible reading

My Thoughts:

I’ve read several books from Sarah Dessen and this one was no different, a good read with real characters that make you feel like you are part of their story.  I liked the dynamics of Mclean’s group of friends.  They were an unlikely bunch, but it worked for them.  Deb was one of my favorite characters.  She was a surprise to everybody, with her hobbies, talents, and take-charge attitude.  I would have to say my least favorite character was the mother.  She just kept pushing Mclean, but she didn’t try to understand her daughter at all.  Too many parents are like that these days though.  It really bugged me that she when she wouldn’t talk to Mclean about the past or the divorce, but just wanted her to be okay with it.

My favorite quote:

I love the part when Dave says “Two a.m.’ He swallowed, then said, “You know. The person you can call at two a.m. and, no matter what, you can count on them. Even if they’re asleep or it’s cold or you need to be bailed out of jail…they’ll come for you. It’s like, the highest level of friendship.”  Found on pages 215-216.

Dislike:

  • The romance was missing.  Not that a book HAS to have romance but I kind of expect it when reading a book by Sarah Dessen. Dave and Mclean were more friends than a couple.

Top Ten Tuesday – Favorite Secondary Characters

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted at the The Broke and the Bookish

  1. Rue from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – one of my favorite characters.
  2. Isabelle from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare – I haven’t read the books completely yet, but she’s just kick-ass in the movie so now I have to read them all.
  3. Tessa and PG from The Infinite Moment of Us by Lauren Myracle – I liked this couple more than the main characters and would like to read a book about them.
  4. Ron Weasley from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling – he was cute & clueless.
  5. Hermione from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling – one of my favorite characters from Harry Potter.
  6. Roarke from the In Death series by J.D. Robb – the hot guy who has everything and can do anything.
  7. Drake from Gone by Michael Grant – He was sooo creepy and he was only 14.

I only came up with 7 this week.  There are so many more memorable secondary characters but I just couldn’t remember them all.

Bout of Books Read-a-thon! Recap

Bout of Books
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal.  It is a week-long read-a-thon that begins 12:01 am Monday, August 19th and runs through Sunday, August 25th in whatever time zone you are in.  Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week.  There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional.  For all Bout of Books 8.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog.  -From the Bout of Books team.

Here’s my tentative list:
